This package is for underground tanks with a maximum capacity from 1,501 to 3,000 litres — the most common sump size in independent houses and small builder-floor buildings. It also covers:

• Shared sumps serving three or four flats.
• Sumps under shops and small commercial buildings.

Estimating your sump's size

Measure the inside of the tank (or ask whoever built it): length × width × usual water depth, in metres. For example, 2 m × 1.25 m × 1.2 m = 3 cubic metres, which is 3,000 litres. If your result is slightly over 3,000, choose the 3,001–5,000 litre package.

What a typical house sump looks like inside

When a sump of this size hasn't been cleaned for six months or more, we usually find:

• A soft layer of brown or grey sludge on the floor, deepest near the inlet.
• Slippery biofilm on the lower walls, and a tide-line where the water level usually sits.
• Debris that entered through the manhole — leaves, dust, sometimes insects.
• In older tanks, flaking plaster and small cracks that hold dirt.

All of it comes out before scrubbing, so it doesn't end up in your rooftop tank.

Access

The manhole for a sump this size is often in the driveway or under the stilt parking. Please move vehicles before the slot and make sure the cover can be lifted — covers that have been cemented or painted shut take extra time to open.
