Which tanks this package covers

Choose this package for underground tanks with a maximum capacity of 1,500 litres or less:

• Small sumps under the stairs, courtyard or front step of an independent house.
• Ground-floor shop or clinic sumps.
• Plastic tanks buried below ground and used as a sump.

A quick way to estimate: a sump measuring about 1.2 m × 1 m inside with water 1.2 m deep holds roughly 1,440 litres. Anything larger belongs in the 1,501–3,000 litre package.

Small sump, same sludge

Small sumps fill and empty quickly, so they see a lot of water pass through relative to their size — and the sediment from all of it settles on a small floor. It's common to find a sludge layer as thick as in a much larger tank. Small sumps also tend to have small manholes, which makes them awkward to clean thoroughly without the right equipment.

How we clean a small sump

1. Isolate the pump and drain the remaining water.
2. Vacuum the sludge out rather than pushing it towards the outlet.
3. Scrub and pressure-wash the walls, floor and the underside of the cover.
4. Disinfect, rinse and close the cover securely.

Because sumps are confined spaces, our team ventilates the tank and keeps a second person at the opening, even for a small tank.
